What’s the best laptop for me?

Shopping around for the best laptop to suit your specific needs is no mean feat – and that’s before you throw in all the techy jargon that can leave you feeling even more lost than before! When it comes to picking up the perfect laptop, there’s no right or wrong answer as everyone is after something slightly different.

While some people centre around the specs of the laptop, others care more about screen size and resolution, and some lean only towards a specific brand that they know and trust already. Before committing to a purchase, there are a few things you should consider, from your budget to your preferred brand and all the specs that lay in between.

What to look for when buying a new laptop

First, you need to consider your budget. There’s a whole host of cheap alternatives out there, from budget-friendly brands that pack a punch to refurbished models that are practically good as new, so whether you’re on a tight budget or you have a little more leeway, you can pick up a high-quality laptop to suit your needs with just a little bit of researching.

Once you’ve figured out your budget, you can start to take a look at the specs and sizes. Laptops tend to start at 11.6” and can go all the way up to a whopping 17.3” but, as you can probably guess, a larger screen usually comes with a larger price tag. So, unless you’re looking to immerse yourself in hours of gaming, a smaller screen size may be the better choice for you. Typically, laptop brands such as HP, Dell and ASUS, offer three display sizes: 13.3”, 15.6” and 17.3”, with the first two of the list being a favourite among users looking for a more portable model. It’s important to note that smaller models with a screen size of 13.3” often don’t support the same high-end CPUs or graphics cards as their 15.6” counterparts, but this shouldn’t be an issue unless you’re looking to use your laptop for work that requires large graphics power.

Now you’ve established your screen size, you need to consider the screen quality – no one wants to be staring at a pixelated screen that looks straight from an 80s arcade! If you’re wanting plenty of space to keep all your window in view, a screen with a 1920x1080-pixel resolution (Full HD) should be the minimum you opt for. Some state-of-the-art laptops now offer screens with a crystal-clear 4K resolution and, while they come at quite a higher price tag, you truly get what you pay for when it comes to quality.

One of the most important factors to consider when buying a new laptop is your CPU, usually provided by the tech titans at Intel. In essence, a CPU is the brains and brawn of your computer. It handles all instructions it receives from all the hardware and software running on your computer, essentially keeping it going. For basic multitasking and multimedia needs, you could quite happily complete all your tasks with a Core i3 or Core i5 processor. If you’re looking to get the best of the best from your laptop, you really can’t go wrong with a Core i7-based system. Some larger laptops come with an Intel i9 CPU, which offers the most powerful performance of all, though these come with a far heftier price tag than even the i7 models.
